I do it every 1500 miles, but, I race the car.
Best answer for you: Do it when it needs it. Sometimes the oil needs changing before the recommended time, sometimes after. It needs to be changed when it is starting to look tinged, not when it is black.
Also changing oil is easy, find the oil pan, find the filter, get something to catch the oil in, there is a bolt in the corner of the oil pan, unscrew it with the oil catch underneath, let it drain, when it's finished, unscrew the filter, let the rest drain out. Once its down to a trickle, screw the bolt back in, pour clean oil into the filter, make sure to lube the o-ring with a small coating, screw the filter in, put a few quarts in(I am not exactly sure how many are needed for the 2) close everything up, start the car, let it get to temp, shut the car off, check oil level, add as needed.
